Activity: run – Centennial Park
Time: 7am
Duration: next question..
Mood/energy: energy - good; mood - not so good
ITB report: unhappy
Another one of those days. Between finding at 6.30am that someone had attempted to park my car in (a 20 point turn later - and somehow managing to avoid 3 brick walls and the said car – I was on my way) and my eTag not beeping as I went through the tunnel, I wasn’t in the best mood when I arrived at Centennial this morning.
The plan was for me to do 30mins and then for Lulu to join me for 70mins (giving me a total of 1hr 40mins). I aborted my run after 56mins after getting some nasty (and unusual pain) under my patella in my right knee.
I was pretty shattered when we got back to the car but the wonderful Lulu aborted her own long run to have a coffee/counselling session with me (thank you!).
My current thinking is to decide on the Half by the end of this week – but right now I am leaning towards abandoning the Half, getting a cortisone injection, taking 2 weeks off and then slowly building up the distances that I can run without tape and without pain. One thing I haven't mentioned in my blog is that while I've had very few problems while actually running, for the last few weeks my right hip hurts when I stand up. My whole right leg is a bit of a mess. I will be extremely disappointed if that is the course of action I settle on but I need to keep my eye on the bigger picture. I've had this injury now for 3 months and it is not improving. Bearing in mind my goals for 2006 and 2007, I don't want to carry this injury into the new year…
Summary: 56mins; 8.8kms
Total for the week: 26.8kms
The week ahead...
Well this is the plan:
Monday: swim + pilates
Tuesday: run (40mins) around the Bay with the Owl
Wednesday: Satan + Pilates
Thursday: run (5km @ race pace)
Friday: swim
Saturday: Satan + 40mins run
Sunday: run (2hrs) - 3 weeks to the HM

Oh dear Jen! The highs and lows of running huh? You seem to get them all. Just have a few complete days of rest and then re-evaluate. Making decisions when things are hurting badly might not be the best time. I know my body would be rejecting me if I tried putting it though what you do every week. Plans for '06 - did I miss blog when you discussed this?
Take care of you, Jen. I know you'll make the right decision.
2 weeks off is tiny compared to the years of running ahead of you. I would wait and see about the half. If anyone can do it on the back of very little mileage...it's you! City2Surf proved that and all the other work you put in will see you right!
Borrowing from Lao Tzu - The teeth are hard and fall out, the tongue is soft and remains ie sometimes you just gotta go with the flow and not try to fight it so hard.
And 56mins is still a pretty good hit out ;-)
Hey Jen! I finally found your blog. You post on mine - but I couldn't reply on your site because your profile doesn't have a link to your blog. I'm going to add you to my blogroll....I hope you don't mind.
I am going through the Lows of running (as wobbly man mentioned) right now so I can certainly relate to what you are going through.
Jen
Getting a cortisone injection is heavy and probably a bit ott. Right now you are at a crossroad. First weigh up your long term health and then look at your goal.
Only you can say whether your long term health will be comprimised.
Sleep on it and see how you feel tommorow. It is amazing how these battles rage in our heads on one day and become so much clearer the next.
Dont be ashamed to pull the pin, just make sure you dont pull it too early. Hang in there!
Hi Jen. I agree with the mexican at the top of the page. Lighten your load. Give your body a day off more often, maybe ? It will be all good in the long run ! :)
Owly got it pretty right - you'd probably be surprised at how much of a base you've already built up Jen. A few days rest won't hurt you right now, and there is still time for more running before the event.
I don't think I'd go with the injection - just time, rest and normal care should do the trick. Don't be worried about losing fitness for CC at this stage.
Sad to see things go awry when they were looking so good. If the pain is bad enough to have you considering a cortisone injection, you would probably be better off not running at Central Coast. There will be plenty of Halfs in the future if you take care of yourself.
Quote for the day: no one said it would be easy, they only said it would be worth it.
Take care. You do have years of running ahead of you, if you want to, so in the scheme of things, this is one small blip.
*hugs* whatever you decide dude, take care of yourself!
