Lady in red....

Lesson no.1: Stop staying up late. Go to bed at a decent hour. You need your beauty sleep. And it's really hard to get your arse out of bed in the morning.

Lesson no.2: Less coffee, more water.

AM: Headed back to the oval this morning for a repeat of last weeks session - 40mins @ 6min/km pace. While I averaged 5:56min/kms last week, the splits showed the true story:

6:18
6:11
6:02
5:47
5:45
5:54

Last name Inconsistency. First name Ms.

So last night I decided the goal for this week's session was consistency and even pacing. After my usual slow start, I wanted to run at least 4kms at 6min pace. On the nose. Garmin Elektra had PMS this morning and didn't want to play so I basically ignored her & tried to pay attention to how I felt.

I finished the session with 6.70kms in 40:19mins (aver 6:01min/km). Let's just say that I am a work in progress:

Km 2 - 6:05
Km 3 - 5:58
Km 4 - 6:00
Km 5 - 5:52
Km 6 - 5:43

Can you tell when I started thinking about breakfast?

The funny thing was that I even said a rude word - out loud - when I saw the last split. Bad Jen. Yeh 'cause a very comfortable 5:43km split at the end of a session after all the problems you've had lately is a bad thing. Not. Ok so I'm not Ms Consistency. Yet. But. I. Will. Be. One. Day.

Oh yeah - no niggles. Very happy days :-)

MTD: 68.15kms

PM: I had planned to go the gym at lunch but got a better offer ;-)

Ran away from the office at 6.30pm for a GRC Pilates class. It wasn't the toughest class I've ever done but I'm feeling pretty fatigued after Monday's weights session with Satan & beating from the Tiger yesterday. My glutes are still complaining 2 hours later.

Needless to say, my glutes & I are looking forward to the rest day tomorrow :-)

If I stop drinking coffee I fall over. Even in my marathon week leadup I think I had a few instead of water.

At least those splits got faster as you went along, better than burning yourself out in the first couple like a lot of people (incl me) do.

I expect that offer would have been worth missing the entire rest of the afternoon, let alone the gym ;)

don't stress about the uneven splits though Jen. It's really hard to do at the best of times, let alone coming back through injuries like you've had to.

So you did wear it then?

Thanks for the lessons Jen. Those are two of my favourites.

Maybe next time pretend you are going to run 9km and just stop early.

You remind me that I need to do some (lots of) glute work. Things are sagging in the back lately!

Oh- from rim to rim the Canyon is about 20 miles on trails. (I think it's a little over a mile as the crow flies, but don't quote me on that!)

Most people take a few kms to warm up, and hence go faster.

So do a 5 km warm up and you'll find your next 10km are more consistent :-/\.
