Truly. Madly

Wednesday 30 August
Would you believe that I was sitting on the couch last night, coffee in hand, reading The Lore of Running ? Truly.

Today I discovered another benefit of having an easy/recovery week in my new "non-racing-listening-to-my-body-just-running-for-the-love-of-it" program - the ability to roll over, turn off the alarm & go back to sleep when waking up to the sound of heavy rain. The fact that I have a sore throat & bit of a head cold at the moment was probably justification enough not to run today. But as much as I love running in the rain, I really love laying in bed listening to the sound of the rain! Interestingly my first thought - after deciding that I wasn't going to run - was that it would stuff up my mileage for the month (particularly given I didn't do my recovery run on Monday). So stoopid but I sometimes find it so easy to get caught up in that mindset - perhaps I should leave Garmin Elektra at home from time to time. Let's call just the decision to stay in bed this morning an example of me actually listening to my body. Yes, I know - there is a first time for everything ;-) I will however make up for my sensible decision (read: laziness) by throwing in another (reduced) bike interval session tomorrow morning.

GRC Pilates class at lunch today with the Satanic Pilates Instructor. I discovered 5mins into the class that my core was still sore & fatigued after Monday's session with Satan. I wanted to curl up in a foetal position under my desk afterwards.

Woohoo - made a flying visit out to Penriff tonight to pick up my new car :-) Now a question for everyone reading this (all 2 of you) - as if I haven't spent enough money recently, I'm planning a trip to Hong Kong in October (yippee!) - any suggestions for places to see, stay, shop and/or run ?

Thursday 31 August
My cold has arrived in full force. Home sick today. Needless to say, no bike session for me this morning. Hopefully I can get out for my run tomorrow morning.

Total mileage for August is 89.95. Check out my snazzy 'mileage' table. My goal for September is consistency.

Another day, another dead lift...

Monday 28 Sept
No recovery run today as I was heading back from Penriff this morning.

After work it was back to the gym for another killer weights session with Satan:

* a circuit of dead-lifts, shoulder press and lying tricep extensions (sans break) with 15kg barbell (same circuit as last week) (3 sets);

* then a circuit of standing flyes followed by prone hold (elbows & toes for 60sec) (2 sets).

It was such a tough session (with more reps on the first circuit than last week). I just about crawled out of the gym afterwards....

Tuesday 29 Sept
It seems it's been a wise decision to have an easy/recovery week this week. Woke up with a bit of a sore throat this morning :-(

Another interval session on the bike this morning while watching L’Alpe d’Huez stage of the 99 TdF. Yes, the boys are still climbing.

5mins warm up
4 x 3min hard/1:30min recovery
5mins cool down
Total: 28mins

Climbing the walls..

I didn't even think about W2B on Saturday morning until I received a message from Go Girl teling me how she went. Must admit that I felt a brief twinge of disappointment & sadness that I wasn't able to join in the fun. Oh well. There's always next year.

Still, I had a rather productive & fun day instead. I bought a car - an 06 Honden Viva. Unfortunately she's not red (she's blue) but I suppose one redhead in the household is more than enough ;-) And later in the afternoon I rounded up my dad & not-so-lil-brother (I was staying at my folks place in Penriff for the weekend) & took them off to do this -

I have ALWAYS wanted to do this but had never got around to it. Both boys are much taller & have much bigger arm span than me but I held my own ;-) Great fun - it's definitely going to become a regular addition to the program.

Today (Sunday) it woke up feeling tired & flat. I certainly did not want to run. I wanted to sit on the couch in my pj's, drinking coffee & reading the papers. It wasn't due to the rock climbing, rather the wine I had last night ;-)

I had 14kms/1hr 40mins on the plan for the day - the first 6kms were complete & utter crap. I felt flat & bored & my lower leg niggles were making themselves known. The first 6kms were a real mental battle today. I found myself thinking 'why bother' because I don't have any big goals for about the next 12 months. But strangely I then found myself thinking "f$ck it, I'm doing it". So I did. I am, of course, glad I did. The niggles started to settle down & the pace picked up without a discernable increase in effort. It's a shame I didn't wear my HRM today - I would have been very interested to see the results, particularly in the second half. My LSD run pace is 7min/km but during the second half of this run I found myself doing 6.30min/kms very easily. Finished with 14.66kms in 1:37:56 (aver 6:41min/km).

MTD: 89.85kms

This week - another consistent week of training. Wow. That's 2 in a row now.
4 x runs (total of 32.68kms)
1 x weights session with Satan
1 x bike (interval) session
1 x Pilates
1 x rock climbing

The week ahead - I know I've only done 2 weeks of consistent training but my lower left leg is a bit of a mess tonight so I'm planning an easy/recovery week next week. Perhaps I'm being a bit too conservative but let’s face it, I’m not training for anything in particular. So same sessions just done at say 70% of the duration of my ‘normal’ sessions.

Monday:
PM: weights session with Satan
Tuesday
AM: bike interval session (4 efforts rather than 6)
PM: massage
Wednesday:
AM: run (30mins @ 6min/km)
PM: pilates
Thursday:
Rest
Friday:
AM: run (32 mins @ 6.30min/km)
PM: pilates
Saturday:
Rest
Sunday:
AM: run (10kms/1hr @ 7min/km)

As Willie Nelson would say....

Let's just get my rant for the day out of the way to begin with -

This thread appeared on CR today. Maybe it's just me but IMHO the Kokoda Track isn't something to be raced. It's the scene of one of Australia's most important and perhaps least known military victories. Many people (on both sides of the battle) fought & died there. For that reason, it's not just any old trail (dare I say it, like Six Foot). Maybe I feel this way because several of my relatives fought in PNG (including both my grandfathers). Maybe because my pop died of the malaria he contracted while serving in PNG in WWII. The idea of conducting, let alone participating in, a race on the Track is absolutely abhorrent to me.

But then again, I would like to trek it one day. Although I think of my plans to trek it as a mark of respect, perhaps there is no difference between that & 'racing' it. Perhaps that makes me a hypocrite. Dunno. Doesn't really matter. But let's just say it's not on my list of "events to do before I die".

Ok, now that I've got that off my chest, back to a happier topic -

Well, if ever you get bored of running around the local streets, here's a tip - do most of your runs on an oval (with a circumference of about 350m) for a period of 2 weeks. Then head back out on the road. Sheer bliss.

Today's plan was 10mins on the oval to warm up and then out onto the road, following part of the Mini-Mos course, for a further 35mins at about 6.30min/km pace. My legs were pretty rusty today - tired & heavy (as they always are after a rest day - I have no idea why) and there was quite a bit of tightness in my lower legs, particularly my left. Hopefully a bit of stretching & self-massage over the next few days will do the trick. Still, I was away from the oval and on the road admiring all the beautiful flowers which have blossomed early so I can't complain. Finished with 7.04kms in 45:28mins (aver 6:28mins/km pace).

It's funny that after spending so much time on the oval recently, today was my first possum sighting for the season. In the space of 10mins I saw not 1 but 2. One was sitting on the fence surrounding the oval watching me. Needless to say, s/he got bored very quickly & soon left ;-) It wont be long now until the now-standard black-outs start happening in the 'hood as the possums start going places they shouldn't (like electricity sub-substations). I think last year we had almost 1 black-out per week. That's a lot of dead possums.

Alas, work has started flooding in again after a week or so of relative quiet so it was no great surprise that I wasn't able to make it out of the office tonight in time to get to pilates. Oh well, I enjoyed my double training session days while they lasted. However I have plans for the weekend that will, I think, more than make up for missing pilates - Stay tuned :-)

Lady in red....

Lesson no.1: Stop staying up late. Go to bed at a decent hour. You need your beauty sleep. And it's really hard to get your arse out of bed in the morning.

Lesson no.2: Less coffee, more water.

AM: Headed back to the oval this morning for a repeat of last weeks session - 40mins @ 6min/km pace. While I averaged 5:56min/kms last week, the splits showed the true story:

6:18
6:11
6:02
5:47
5:45
5:54

Last name Inconsistency. First name Ms.

So last night I decided the goal for this week's session was consistency and even pacing. After my usual slow start, I wanted to run at least 4kms at 6min pace. On the nose. Garmin Elektra had PMS this morning and didn't want to play so I basically ignored her & tried to pay attention to how I felt.

I finished the session with 6.70kms in 40:19mins (aver 6:01min/km). Let's just say that I am a work in progress:

Km 2 - 6:05
Km 3 - 5:58
Km 4 - 6:00
Km 5 - 5:52
Km 6 - 5:43

Can you tell when I started thinking about breakfast?

The funny thing was that I even said a rude word - out loud - when I saw the last split. Bad Jen. Yeh 'cause a very comfortable 5:43km split at the end of a session after all the problems you've had lately is a bad thing. Not. Ok so I'm not Ms Consistency. Yet. But. I. Will. Be. One. Day.

Oh yeah - no niggles. Very happy days :-)

MTD: 68.15kms

PM: I had planned to go the gym at lunch but got a better offer ;-)

Ran away from the office at 6.30pm for a GRC Pilates class. It wasn't the toughest class I've ever done but I'm feeling pretty fatigued after Monday's weights session with Satan & beating from the Tiger yesterday. My glutes are still complaining 2 hours later.

Needless to say, my glutes & I are looking forward to the rest day tomorrow :-)

Spinning around...

I have to say that I'm feeling much better (emotionally) this week about 'stuff'. I didn't realise until this week just how much the 'open door' was weighing on me. Last week's 'door closing' seems to have lifted quite a weight off my shoulders. I'm sure I will still have 'down' days from time to time but today has been the first time that I feel like I am on the road moving forward again and am looking forward with equal parts of anticipation, excitement & terror ;-) Geez, I think I've poured out more emotional stuff in the last few weeks than I have in the last year. I have come to realise recently (amongst other things) just how much the emotional 'stuff' impacts on my training. Anyway enough emotional dribble - on with the training...

This morning, an interval session on the bike which I stole/borrowed from Strewth - thanks Strewth :-)

5mins warm up
6 x 3min hard/1:30mins recovery
5mins cool down
Total: 37mins

That's one tough session Strewth. I was dripping in sweat quite quickly. Thankfully I was able to distract myself by watching my '99 TdF DVD - turns out I was up to my fav stage - L'alpe d'Huez. Perfect interval session viewing. Thankfully the peleton (including my man Lance) were only half way up the 'hill' by the time my session ended so I can finish the stage during my next session :-)

...big things grow

I *really* struggled to get out of bed this morning. I woke up feeling really tired and have absolutely no recollection of hitting the snooze button not once or twice but 3 times - something I NEVER do. Once I finally got my butt out of bed, I headed back to the oval (my second home!) for an easy/recovery run. The resident magpie is slowly but surely making her presence known though I haven't been, or seen anyone, swooped yet. It won't be long before I move my second home to another (magpie-free) oval a bit further from home.

I had 30mins on the plan but my left lower leg was a tad unhappy this morning. I thought of pulling the pin at 20mins but it seemed to settle down (or warm up) so I ultimately finished the session pretty comfortably. 4.28kms in 30:02mins (aver 7:01min/km).

After work it was back to the gym for another killer weights session with Satan:

* a circuit of dead-lifts, shoulder press and lying tricep extensions (sans break) with 15kg barbell (up from 12.5kgs last week) (3 sets);

* then a circuit of side leg lifts, rotator cuff moves and her favourite side oblique move (1 set).

That was a really bloody tough session. I was feeling pretty tired at work today & arrived at the gym feeling tired, flat & between you and me, slightly dreading the session. Thankfully the endorphins kicked in early during the session & I finished feeling strong & exhausted.

Then home to do continue on with some CR secretarial stuff I was working on during Saturday afternoon which I have been very lax in taking care of recently. Hopefully life will settle down now for a while - at least until my sea change kicks in (in whatever form that actually takes)...

My new wobble cushion thingy arrived today. ET suggested I use one to work on the deep muscles in my lower legs & I had, on occasion, been using the ones in the gym. But now I have my very own to add to the expanded collection of paraphernalia which is scattered across my loungeroom - the stick, rolling pin, golf ball, tennis ball, fuel belt, CR hat, bike, windtrainer. At least my loungeroom looks like it belongs to an athlete ;-)

The best things in life....

*Jen cartwheels across the loungeroom*

A great run this morning & yum cha with my nearest & dearest girlfriends - seriously, life does not get much better than this!

Except for W2G, I have not felt soooooo good running in soooooo long. This morning's run was one of those which reminds you that persevering through the frustration, tears, stoopid niggles and incessant icing & stretching is worth it.

I had 14kms/1hr 40mins on the plan for today and had decided to run the trail near home - one of my fav runs. It is rocky & technical in parts so perhaps was not the best option given the state of my lower legs in recent weeks, but my 'yum cha' plans meant that I had to be on the road before 7 so it was either the trail or 14kms of concrete & hills.

I loved this run. I felt fit & strong & my lower legs felt good - no sign of niggles until late in the run when my right hip/glute started to make itself known. It was a clear & mild morning and there were very few people out on the trail until later in the run.

Did I mention that I really enjoyed it? I finished with 13.75kms in 1:41:04 (aver 7.21mins/km) giving a MTD of 57.17kms.

I didn't have enough time to do my ritual 30mins of stretches afterwards so I stretched for 10mins before jumping in the shower & running cold water over my legs for 10mins in what my nan would call a 'character building' exercise. It seems to have worked - they are feeling pretty good now.

This week has been a really solid week of training for me (*yippee*). My legs seem to have recovered well from the Wednesday's run which left them feeling really beaten up:
4 x runs (total of 30.63kms)
1 x weights session with Satan
2 x pilates classes

The week ahead - has the same (run) sessions as this week
Monday:
AM: 30mins easy/recovery run on grass
PM: weights session with Satan
Tuesday:
AM: interval session on the bike
PM: massage
Wednesday:
AM: 40mins @ 6min/km pace
PM: pilates
Thursday:
Rest (session with Saint Andrew)
Friday:
AM: 45mins @ 6.30min/km pace
PM: pilates
Saturday:
Rest
Sunday:
AM: 14kms/1hr 40mins LSD run @ 7min/km pace

From little things...

Thanks to the PG for checking up on me over the last few days :-)

Now while I think of it, the following 'runs' are on my new non-racing training program:
* Blackmores 9km where I will be keeping Lulu company - 17 Sept;
* Fitzroy Falls 10kms - 14 Oct;
* Central Coast Half - 3 Dec;
* Black Stump - 1 Jan.

Let it be known that I'm not racing any of these (except maybe for the FF10kms). The CC Half in particular I'm just treating as an LSD run. A few people have asked me in the last few days if I think of the CC Half as my nemesis I didn't get to the start line last year. In all honesty, I don't. Although I don't have a Half PB (thanks for the non-Half Hunter Valley), I've since done W2G so I admit that some of the 'gloss' of doing my first Half has worn off. For me this year, the focus of the CC Half weekend is on having a fun weekend with my friends.

Wednesday's run left my legs feeling rather beaten up. So I headed back to the oval this morning for 45mins going round & round in circles sans-iPod at about 6:30min/kms pace.

Clearly I don't bore easily.

18 odd laps later, I finished with 7.10kms for my 45:09mins (aver 6:21min/kms). I've noticed in the last few weeks how my sessions are slowly but surely getting quicker. It's nice to have more than one speed. My legs are feeling much better this afternoon than they did on Wednesday afternoon so heading back to the oval for this session was the right thing to do.

I had planned to do the (hatha) yoga class at lunch but got caught in a conference call & missed it. So I left the office at 5pm and, rather than heading for work drinks, went to the gym for a GRC Pilates class. How is that for dedication? One of the toughest I've done so far. Good way to end a rather ordinary week.

This too shall pass

I had an acupuncture appointment this morning but cancelled it. I was feeling pretty fragile (emotionally) after a door finally & officially closed on one part of my life this morning so I decided the last thing I needed was some dude sticking needles into me. I know that with one door closing, I should be looking forward to the day that another one opens but I'm not there yet. I'm just feeling sad today.

**********

This morning (Wednesday) I headed out for a run a bit later than normal - it's soooo nice to run during daylight hours again. I haven't run on the road for a few weeks so I decided to get back out there. Started with 10mins on the grass at the oval to warm my legs up before heading out for a 25mins loop on the streets around the 'hood before finishing with another 5mins on the grass at the oval. I felt very unfit during the run & couldn't help but think that I shouldn't have lost so much fitness after 2 easy weeks - but then I checked my splits. Unfortunately my legs are feeling pretty beaten up tonight so it will be back to the oval on Friday morning. Finished with 6.75kms in 40:07mins (aver 5:56mins/kms).

MTD: 36.32kms

After work tonight I met Lulu at the gym for a GRC Pilates class. Afterwards we were joined by Owly and Mr Lulu for a lovely dinner at a Japanese restaurant in Surry Hills. A lovely way to end what was a pretty rough day for me. Thanks guys :-)

**********

I've been thinking about my training in the last few days. The traditional approach to training (ie pick an event & train for it) doesn't seem to work from me. My strike rate is 0 for 2. Not good. Given that there are very few events coming up over the next few months which appeal to me, I thought I'd turn my approach to training around. Write a program designed to slowly build up my mileage again whilst keeping my legs happy and then see what events come up along the way.

So I've written a very sensible program for the next 10 weeks. It's so sensible it's boring. Starting with a long run of 14kms this weekend, I'm only increasing my mileage every 2nd week (and the increase is limited to 10%) & then having an easy/recovery week every 3rd week. Once this "phase" is done, I'm going to keep my LSD run where it will then be (20kms) & replace one of my midweek runs with a session at RunClub so that I'm not increasing mileage & introducing interval stuff at the same time. Told you it was boringly sensible. Pfitzinger would be proud.

And if that doesn't work, I'm hanging up my Brooks & taking up origami.

Zero. Zip. Nada.

I did absolutely no exercise over the weekend. Nada. Zip. Zero. I don't remember the last time I did that. And I didn't feel guilty. After rolling over & turning the alarm off on Friday morning, I decided to give myself the weekend off in the hope that my sore throat and sniffle would disappear and my mojo would return by Monday.

After a sleep-in & a lazy morning around the house on Saturday, Miners picked me up at about 4.30pm to head to Owly's place. Owly had kindly offered to let us stay on Saturday night as the pre-C2S dinner was just around the corner from her house. After some apricot loaf and a chat it was off to dinner. It was great to catch up with the lovely banjo playing Tesso (*waves*) and a few others I hadn't seen in a while. I also managed to blow Sparkie away, & keep up with O Runner, in the pizza eating contest so it was a productive evening all round. Thanks Owly for your wonderful company - you are right - I think we both needed it :-)

Yesterday (Sunday) morning we were up early as Miners and Owly got ready to run and I sat on the couch watching them. Go Girl arrived shortly before 7am for a quick hello before she & Miners set off to get a bus to the start. Owly & I left not long after as Caro and another RunClubber had kindly offered us a lift into the city. I waved goodbye to the girls at Town Hall and had a coffee while waiting for my fellow cheerleader Rags to arrive. Fortunately for the masses, Rags had left his short skirt & knee high cheerleading boots at home ;-)

Rags & I arrived at Bondi early after getting a train from Town Hall & a bus from Bondi Junction so we found a cafe and sat down for a leisurely breakfast while taking in the view & quickly decided that we had adopted the most sensible method of transport to Bondi on such a fine morning.

At about 10am, we were joined by Sparkie as we headed up to our vantage spot, just near the North Bondi Surf Club, for a couple of hours of cheering, later joined by Nando and then Owly (bearing more apricot loaf). Once everyone we knew had past us, we headed over to the Strider's tent before being quickly rounded up & pointed in the direction of the pub for a drink or three. Owly & I ended up leaving at about 5.30pm to get a bus back into the city, at which time Owly had the wonderful idea of getting some sushi for dinner - a much healthier &nutritiouss dinner than the cereal & toast I would otherwise have had. Just before 7pm we said our farewells and I got home at about 7.30pm, one very tired cheerleader.

I tend to think of C2S as my "running anniversary". Last year's C2S was my first ever fun run. I guess that makes yesterday my first running anniversary. Unfortunately I spent yesterday (as I have spent most of the last year) cheering instead of running. As much as I enjoy cheering & consider it "soul food", I'm really quite jack of it. No, that's not true. It's not the cheering that I'm jack of. It's the "not running" part that I am seriously jack of. I suppose I could give up running & take up another sport - like lawnbowls. Or needlework. Or trainspotting. Or drinking - but I doubt any of those sports will nourish my soul or give me a greater sense of accomplishment than running does.

Today (Monday) I'm still sans-goal - I have a few in mind but nothing concrete yet - but managed to drag my butt out of bed this morning for an easy 20mins (recovering from cheering) run around the oval (again). 3.03kms in 20:34mins (aver 6:47min/kms). The arch of my left foot was really tight which I tried to ignore by focusing on my technique and footfall. It didn't work.

After work today I headed into the gym for a not-so-easy weights session with Satan. Today's party consisted of:

* a circuit of dead-lifts, shoulder press and bicep curls (sans break) with 12.5kg barbell (3 sets);

* then a circuit of side leg lifts, rotator cuff moves and her favourite side oblique move (2 sets).

Nasty. My legs & shoulders are toast.

I choose...

sleep.

This morning, for the first time since I started running again in March, I rolled over, turned off the alarm & went back to sleep - in the knowledge that I wouldn't be able to squeeze my run in during the day! Such a rebel I know ;-) I really need to find a new goal race otherwise I could really get used to the extra sleep-in ;-)

But stay tuned & never fear; a new plan is (almost) born and a few more days of R & R is needed physically & emotionally before it kicks off.

BTW, I've decided not to run C2S but I will be there in a cheerleading capacity - not to mention to catch up with my friends over a quiet ale or two afterwards :-)

A sea change...

I have been contemplating a sea change for some time. But it's getting close to decision-making time. Combined with long days in the office, it's making this a stressful yet exciting time for me.

Monday 7 August: what doesn't kill me....
A date in the gym with Satan after work. As always a tough session - on the menu today was:

* first a circuit (using a 15kg barbell) of 20 reps of bent-row overs, bicep curls & squats each with no break in between each set followed by 30 starjumps (sans barbell) - repeated 3 times. My quads were completely fried after the second set...

* finally a second of push-ups, a (side) prone-hold for obliques & crunches, repeated twice.

Needless to say, I slept bloody well.

Wednesday 9 August: white hot...
Headed back to the oval today. I had 40mins on the plan but needed to get into work asap so cut it back to 30mins & decided to find out what a 6min/km felt like (after all my slow stuff lately) while trying to work on my new technique. It's beginning to feel more natural.

Finished with 4.99kms in 30:09mins - aver of 6:02min/km - so on the face of it, it looks like I achieved my goal. The splits tell a different story:
7:01
6:19
5:57
5:38
5:17 !!

At the moment (Thursday) I'm not sure whether I will run C2S. I'm fighting off a cold. And now that I'm out of W2B & cutting back the training a bit, there doesn't seem to be much point in doing a hilly 14kms run when a flat 12kms last weekend left me with unhappy lower legs. But don't think I'm about to miss out on the fun.....

PS my faith in the fact that my clients appreciate what I do is renewed. I had a wonderful surprise today - clients sent me a dozen long stem red roses to thank me :-)

We'll always have Paris

One sad day in cycling. Am I the only one feeling really disillusioned with the TdF right now?

Several CRs had decided to meet today for a run through the Royal National Park south of Sydney. The customs office must not have been open so early as I didn't need to present my passport as we entered The Shire ;-)

Rags picked me up from home at 6am for the drive south which took just under an hour (including a slight detour). Somewhere in the Shire (Grey's Point maybe) we met up with Mr & Mrs Wildthing & the Owl and did a car swap. After a decison I made last night (see below) I decided to take the shorter option so I jumped into the car with WT who was heading down to Audley in the national park while Mr WT and Owly joined Rags for the trip to the main meeting point.

WT set out on her bike while I waited in the "fresh" air for the main group to arrive. And arrive in force they did. I hadn't expected so many. I quickly tacked onto the back of the pack with Owly and Blue Dog who kept us company.

The run followed Lady Carrington Drive - a fire trail & great running surface complete with a few puddles of mad thanks to recent rain. Surprisingly it warmed up quite quickly. After 45mins I decided to leave Owly & Blue Dog & turned around to head back to the car (with a slight detour for a pit stop). In all I finished with 12.15kms in 1:21:05 (aver 6:40mins/km). Let's just say that the legs are not very happy - my TLF/hip & right ITB (yes, The Problem Child) have been tightening up over the last few weeks & today I had a bit of ITB pain :-(

Once WT finished her off-road duathlon, we climbed into the car & went looking forward to rest of the group who had run back to their starting point - another 4kms up (literally) the road. It was then onto the "Norton St of the south" for breakfast. A nice way to start a relaxing Sunday morning.

Thanks to Neil for organising it; Rags for the lift and Owly & Blue Dog for their company :-)

**********************************

I have chosen not to do W2B. It was THE "goal race" that I set for myself when I stopped running due to my ITB problem in November last year and has been the source of my inspiration since then. I now know that I could/can do it which in itself I think of as a huge achievement. I certainly didn't believe it was possible when I started running again in March this year. But thanks to the support, encouragement & occassional nudge in the back to keep me moving forward from close friends, my fitness is now at the point of being able to run the distance & course. Unfortunately my body isn't up to it. My lower leg niggles show no sign of abating & now that my ITB is (slightly) unhappy, I am not prepared to accept the risk of doing further damage. Being able to continue to run (particularly given all that is going on in my life at the moment) is too important to me. I learnt that lesson last year. I feel ok about the decision - I have come so much further this year than I ever thought I would. After all, life (and running) is about the journey, not the destination :-)

So where does that leave me? Right now, I don't know. C2S is next week (& is the race that kicked off my ITB problems last year) so I will batter my lower legs & ITB into submission over the next 7 days. After that, I'll cut back the running (by how much I don't know) and focus on overcoming these problems. I've been dreading running for a few weeks now & am looking forward to running again without the dread & constant battle with one niggle or another. I'm definitely planning to do the Fitzroy Falls 10kms and a few of the Kembla Joggers mountain running series (which will certainly test out the legs).

Of course, this decision means that I won't be doing Six Foot next year. Bummer. Lucky the Glasshouse 50kms is already on the plan for 2007 ;-)

Look out Lance!

I'm missing the enjoyment too Hilda :-(

After a much needed sleep-in, I pulled out the windtrainer (or "mag" trainer as the tri-geek Miners calls it) this cold, wet & windy Saturday morning. It came with a training DVD led by Chris Carmichael, Lance's coach, so I figured I'd give it a go today. 50mins & loads of sweat later, I just about fell off the bike. Bloody tough but I really enjoyed it. Now that's done, I can lay on the couch, guilt free, reading for a couple of hours :-)

Long run in the Royal National Park tomorrow - just how long, I'll let the body decide tomorrow.

An update

No you don't Portrunr ;-)

Owen asked about my attempts to change my footstrike. I'm trying to concentrate on my clawback - Owly also suggested thinking about your feet moving in circles - but gee it's tiring and I feel very unco. It will feel more natural with time I suppose...

Tuesday 1 August
Rest day

Can't say I'm sad to see the end of July. One very bad month. Rest day today - had to cancel my appointment with ET due to work

Wednesday 2 August
AM: 40mins easy run on grass around & around the oval, changing direction every 10mins to break up the monotomy & boredom. Finished with 6.21kms in 40:14mins (aver 6:28min/kms). Several rather prominent niggles....

Massage tonight.

Thursday 3 August
GRC Pilates class (reformer machines) with a large focus on glutes (thanks to my special request). Really tough session which I really enjoyed

Friday 4 August
AM: Same session round & round the oval as on Wednesday morning right down to distance, time & pace! (Unfortunately comments about the niggles also apply).
PM: (Hatha) yoga class at lunch. Lots of standing poses; perfect given I didn't get much of a chance to stretch after my run this morning.

MTD: 12.43kms

...is just before....

Yes, Sparkie. It's still red ;-)

This arrived in my inbox today. Perfect timing. I needed it today

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN OVERNIGHT SUCCESS

"Keep going" is the rule that must be followed if you want to be successful and achieve what you have your sights firmly set on. Your success will always be connected with your actions. Just keep moving towards your goal.

You'll make mistakes along the way but get up, brush yourself off, focus on what you want and keep going. You may even have to hang on after others have let go.

Persistence means taking pains to overcome every obstacle, to do whatever it takes, whatever is necessary to reach your goal. In the end, only the people who fail are those that aren't prepared to have a go and keep moving.

All great achievement takes time.
